Religious Education
Religious Education is one of the foundation subjects within the National Curriculum.
Children are taught key aspects of the main world religions: Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, Islam along with Humanism. We study holy writings, significant people, places and ways of worship and important festivals and ceremonies such as marriage and baptism.
At WPS we regularly plan trips to places of worship as we think these are valuable experiences that the children learn a great deal from! All children visit the Church of St John the Baptist in Werrington at different points in the year (key times are for our Christmas and Easter service but year groups also attend for additional learning such as to learn the features of the church or roles within a church). In year 2 the children also visit a Mosque; in year 3 the children experience a different church such as Kingsgate; year 4 have the experience of a Gurdwara; year 5 enjoy visiting a Hindu Temple and year 6 experience a Buddhist Temple.
In addition to these valuable first hand experiences we try to learn from visitors and members of our community as much as possible and enjoy inviting the experts into our classrooms.
Each term we hold a whole school RE Day where we focus on a different religion. This enables the children to more regularly learn about each religion and we are lucky that members of our community come in to lead assemblies and share experiences with us. We try to tie these days with key festivals such as Eid or Divali and the children love sampling food, learning stories, songs and joining in creative activities.
Religious Education is a statutory subject. Parents may, however, withdraw their child from religious education. Parents should put such requests in writing.
