Science is a core subject of the National Curriculum and as such, all of our pupils are entitled to an exciting broad, balanced and differentiated Science Curriculum. The skills, knowledge and concepts of the subject are categorised into 4 programmes of study:

• Working Scientifically
• Life Processes and Living Things
• Materials and Their Properties
• Physical Processes

In KS1, we enable pupils to experience and observe scientific phenomena, looking more closely at the natural and humanly constructed world around them. We encourage children to be curious and ask questions about what they notice. Some of the topics covered include: Living Things in their Habitats, Plants and Materials.

In KS2, our science teaching allows pupils to broaden and deepen their scientific view of the world. We encourage them to think ‘scientifically’ and learn through practical experiments and experiences, including a variety of outdoor and off-site educational visits. KS2 scientific topics include: Light, Forces, Earth and Space, and Electricity.

‘Working scientifically’ is the thread of the curriculum which underpins all scientific learning at Werrington Primary School, as we recognise its importance in developing a host of skills and scientific qualities which bring enormous benefits to our developing scientists.

Every year we also organise a variety of exciting and inspiring activities to celebrate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) Week. These may include Science shows, visits from external scientists and practical challenges to solve.
